Gee whiz Nicole! This is like something out of an old novel. How cool to do something like this not only at our age, but in this age where most would only watch programs about a voyage like yours! Out of all the colleges you could have gone to, I'm glad you'll be at Marist. You're drive and experiences will only bring that much more to our campus and to your class. I hope your summer is treating you well and thanks for letting me know about your website! It's phenomenal! See you in the fall! ~Pam (O-Leader) GROUP 10 FOREVER!!!
Joanne Dalsimer | joanne at dalsimer.net -- Thursday, June 16, 2005 | 19:25:01
Well it's been 2 1/2 weeks since the sailors have returned home, and I'd like to share with everyone what that experience has been like. In many ways having them back has been as surreal as when they were away, especially the first week. Every morning breakfast is cooking and coffee perking. Every afternoon when I return home from work my bed has been made, dishes done, laundry finished and folded and put away. The refrigerater is stocked and dinner is simmering on the stove in the evening. What dream am I living now?? Nicole is consumed with organization and order and responsible for all of the above. She and Stewart have been moving at a different pace as Jamie and I frantically prepare for finals and the closing of school. Stewart is once again harvesting strawberries and putting the yard back in order (no we never did rake those leaves last Fall). He has resumed consulting on several jobs and has been interviewing for others. Peace and tranquility have rained for 2 weeks and it has been heaven on earth, not the disruption that Jamie and I fearfully dreaded. Yesterday was the first time I heard a voice raised and it was quickly replaced with a burst of laughter. Who are these people and what did they do with my husband and daughter? We are slowly adjusting again as a family. After doing any and everything possible (more cleaning including Jamie's room)to delay the editing of the book, Nicole has recently taken the bull by the horns and is attacking several pages of the book per day. She has grown in strength, wisdom, beauty, knowledge and spirit, and Stewart has never been so proud. Jamie and I have taken bonding to a new age level and have already planned our next private, vacation alone together. For the moment, we are content as a family and are extremely grateful for this moment. We look forward to some time sailing this summer and hope to have anyone who would like to join us, do so. Just say the word, and if the wind is right... Wishing everyone a delightful summer. Love, Joanne

I feel the Dalsimer energy creeping up the coast reminding us how much we've missed you all this while. I'm sure you're savoring the last bit of this special, private life you've created together. I know it will be hard to move on. The underwater pics are phenomenal. The photos of the Bahamian sloops an apt subject for a painting, Nicole! Nic-Nic (and Captain) - Of course we didn't forget about you -- as crazy as we thought the trip was, we think you are even crazier to come back! New York has been March in May (cold, rainy) and we can't imagine why you want to return!!! Except of course that we miss you and want to see you. (As we are sure your Mom and sister do!) I didn't forget.....I've been overwhelmed with little league. This is so torturous. Every weekend and games during the week! Ethan had a 7:45 game on Friday night (they won)...another one on Sat night (they tied). Then, a continuation game on Monday night (they won). Ethan is completely thrilled that his last day of Hebrew school was tonight and Jessica is happy that hers is Thursday. I've been packing them for sleepway...the ping pong table is covered with clothing. Jessica's birthday party is soon and we've been arranging that....she is excited to turn 9. Ethan on the other hand, keeps begging for a cell phone...he is ready to do almost anything at this point. So...we all can't wait to see you......Drive or steer home safely Love Debi, Ethan & Jessica

Welcome back to the USA. What a great way to return - Outback steakhouse and Coldstone Ice Cream! If you are still in Florida on Saturday, please join us in Orlando for Melissa's Bat Mitzvah! I'll gladly pick you guys up from a nearby port. Beyond that, let me know when you intend to arrive back in the Long Island Sound, and I'll try to arrange a greeting party aboard Sea Major (she's looking fine, and I like her new home in Oyster Bay). Enjoy the last leg of the journey home.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY Stewart - What a great way to spend the year and your birthday. Is weird, I just looked at the pictures and dont ever remember seeing you without a beard. I did see a beardless picture of you when you were 14 and I was 5. Looks great. Glad you caught some fish. Hello Nichole - thanks for hosting so well when I was down in Georgetown with your. I was amazed at how much both of you do on a daily basis. Between fixing the engine, buying and cooking food, taking the dingy up and lots of other chores - you guys keep busy. Safe travels and Happy Birthday again. BOB, Kei, Julie and David (and Happy)

Hey Stewart, I just had to write to tell you I like the beard off! You look so handsome and 10 years younger!!!! I know you're growing it back, but off is my vote. I have been keeping tabs on boattales everyday. It looks like you're having a wonderful time. Everytime I look at the pictures of Nicole I have to do a double take. She looks just like Joanne. It's unbelievable. Are you going up the intercoastal waterway at West palm beach. If you are, look to your left just behind the Palm Beach Yacht Club. Sarah lives in Yacht Club Towers. If you are stopping around there and you have time, give her a call. She'd love to see you. Her cell is 570-510-0087. Give my love to Nicole and stay safe ! Angela

Well the sailors are now on the final leg of their amazing cruising journey. With less than one month to go their ETA is somewhere between June 5-9, at the Barron's Boat Yard in City Island, NY. Our last vacation together as a family in the Bahamas proved to be another wonderful memory in the making as Jamie stated earlier. We enjoyed the native Bahamian sloop races in George Town, Exumas, breathtaking snorkeling at Thunderball Grotto, Staniel Cay and the spectacular luxury of The Atlantis Marina and Resort with Bonnie and Manny. It's been a whirlwind adventure for all of us, on sea and land. Thank you to all the arm chair sailors who supported Stewart and Nicole with their guest comments when following this remarkable trip. Please keep the comments coming till fair winds and calm seas bring them safely home to us. Best wishes to all until the welcome home parties! Joanne

Hey guys, Well we just arrived safely home after travelling all day. (we met some very interesting people in the airport)I had an amazinnggg time in the Bahamas! The snorkeling at Thunderball Grotto was spectacular. Being surrounded by so many interesting and beautiful fish was breathtaking. Docking at the Atlantis Resort Marina in Nassau was one of the most memorable experiences in my life. The 60ft almost-vertical drop, Leap of Faith waterslide, was one of the scariest 3 seconds of my life. I loved seeing all of the aquariums, attractions, and entertainment. (Bonnie provided a lot of that, singing Happy Birthday to me in Italian lol) Well I'm sad it's over but I'm glad that I took part in this adventure and got 3 vacation's out of it! See you kids in 5 weeks <3 J

Hello Sailors! Your amazing adventures just keep on coming. It is hard to believe that you have been away since...November. Almost 6 months! Well, one thing that we have in common is that fish is the predominant theme in our house too. We have two ponds in our garden with about a dozen carp that Ashley loves to play with. She talks to them (bloop, bloop!), sings to them and feeds them. Last weekend, we took her to the London Aquarium and had a blast showing her the shark tank. We also made a new addition to our family...a goldfish! We've had him for only 6 days and today he almost died because we didn't adjust the filter properly. Apparently, the tank wasn't getting enough oxygen and the poor little guy was suffocating. So, thanks to some excellent advice from Uncle Mike, we were able to save our newest pet. In other news, we had a great vacation in Morocco in March, are heading to Munich this month and will then work our way to the US in May. Maybe our paths will cross there. Meanwhile, keep on truckin'. Love, The Hatstadts

You guys are living a very special life!!!! I haven't been in touch with Joanne for a while and what a suprising shock to find that her other half is AWEIGH! I can't wait to finish reading about all of your travels! Maybe we can catch up with you on a remote island somewhere. Too bad we're in school. We loved St Lucia last summer and it looks as though you saw the beautiful Pitons. Enjoy each other and this fantastic way to live!

Nik- I don’t know if you heard the news but I was faced with a very hard decision… because I’m graduating soon I need to really get down to business with my school work. Turns out I was planning on coming down for a sail on May 4th – guess what? FINALS WEEK!!! So there I am absolutely stuck – college finals??? Sailing??? Hmmm?... I had to be a mature adult on this one Nik... I had to go with sailing, haha! So now I am under all this pressure you jerk! Not only am I losing a week of school but it’s the last week and finals, but oh well I’ll have it all done and out of the way and then doooown to you! I am so pumped. Tell uncle Stew I’m so so sorry he has to deal with us for 7 days… but it could be worse – I could come back up to NY for 3 months again!!! Can’t wait to see you, we’re gonna have the craziest time (doing all those educational activities you have planned of course) Love you, See you in less than a month! PS “just let me”… do I have to share a bed with you? :)

Hi Nicole & Stewart, We had a Spring brunch yesterday to remember Andy's birthday. It was a wonderful way to spend the day. I believe we had close to 40 adults and 15 kids. Joanne brought me cards made from your watercolors Nicole..they are so beautiful! Jessica was amazed and when you come home, I know she'd love to see the originals. She doesn't understand how you painted the cards so small :) ...... Jessica loves art too and I think she wants to try watercolor painting next. Enjoy your adventure.....and keep painting Nicole! Casa de Campo & the dominican republic look beautiful--I'll add that to my list of places I want to go to. Nicole, I am giving your mom a few more books to bring down for you to read in April. Hope you enjoy them. I am heading off to Utah on Monday and Suss will join me there on Wednesday. Can't wait for spring skiing out west! Keep the fun going strong! Love, Sheryl

It seem so right that you guys are getting to spend this time together! Alan, while missed here, I know Stewart appreciates your resourcefulness and that Jessica is only able to give herself up to this because of her faith in you. Jessica, stepping into the unknown at this fragile time was very courageous. I'm seeing warrior spirit in you, girl! I know you will be nourished by the sun, the sea and our dear friends. Nicole, simply 'thank you' for sharing your experiences with all of us in your soulful stories and pictures. It is all so you! I know Jess is having a ball funing it up with you! Stewart...what can I say...there's still not a thing about you that bothers me!! :o ...you're an awesome fund of sailing knowledge and sea-worthy wisdom. There is so much we all would do well to learn from you!! Have a great week! Janet

I loved reading all the updates and feeling the the excitement clearly laced throughout your web entries. I'm in Florida visiting Mike & Melissa for a few days. In between, I've been sewing new slip covers for Sea Major. Not as challenging as building 3 sails, but hoping they'll give the old gal a new look. (You'll love what I did with the name). If you should be so lucky as to pull up a Yanmar head hatch on one of your fishing lines, please don't throw it back! Decided to launch from Oyster Bay next season. Talya is signed up for sailing camp at Camp Fuller - hope to deliver her by boat. Here's to going with the flow and the blow...

If you've never been to Aruba-it's time! Friendly people, seemingly in competition for-The nicest person on the island award. Beautiful beaches, entertainment, sightseeing and hospitality. We had a fabulous sail from peaceful, lovely (spectacular snorkeling & diving) Bonaire. Again, some cherished family moments but extremely difficult to say good bye, yet again. Nicole and Stewart, watching you sail together is a beautiful sight and most inspiring. Now if every day were sailing! Hold that thought. Wishing you a safe passage to the DR to be embraced in the arms of dear friends very shortly. See you in the Bahamas! Love and kisses (from Jamie & Xuxa too), Joanne aka Mom

Dear Mom, Dad, Nicole and Jamie, Sorry I didn't check in sooner but I have been very busy here on the play-date OF MY LIFE!!! After the first cautious day, Benny and Ruby included me more and more in their activities and in no time we were chums! These guys really are alot of fun! But, I guess I should tell you now though, that I am not much used to peer pressure and under the influence of my friends did not always live up to the behavior you would expect of me. I knew it was wrong to steal stuff from Rachel's room but everyone was doing it. And Benny said no one would mind if we shredded the toilet paper. Well...actually they dared me to shred it and in the thrill of the moment I didn't think about consequences. Good thing Janet realized I am way to short to reach the toilet paper in the first place and knew I was set up! Don't worry, in the end we all got treats, hugs and love. I feel very comfortable here sleeping on top of the laundry basket under my blanket. I picked this bunk on my very first night so they have'nt moved it to put the cloths away. I also learned that if you go outside to make, you get a treat if you go right to your crate when you come in. Sometimes we jump at the door to go out just to come back in for the treat! (..hee hee!!) I have been friendly and affectionate to everyone and have used my best manners at meal time. I do think they all really like me alot. I'm only afraid it will be hard on them when I have to go. I miss you all and...wait...sorry...gotta go!!!...think they found an open trash basket!!!...this is gonna be GREAT!! Bye!

Hi all, Hope yo're having a great time all together. I just want to know if Charlie the giant tarpon is still around. Last time I was in Bonaire I went on a night dive from shore and thought saw a shark swimming next to me. I was so scared I got out of the water faster than you can imagine. Only later was I told that that was no shark, it was Charlie the tarpon who likes to use the light from divers flashlights to look for his dinner!!! How embarrassing! Love to you all! Sheryl

Ahoy Stewart and Nicole, Oh my God. What an amazing trip. Nicole, I've always known your dad to have a very spiritual side, I think the music brings it out in him (when we can get him to play-lol) and it's fabulous to hear you wax philisophical about time on your own and the beauty of the sunrise and sunsets! Reminds me of why I think your whole family is so special. Stewart, I can only imagine that among all the adventures and beauty of the trip one of the highlights must be seeing a chilly Nicole wearing SEVERAL LAYERS OF CLOTHING (lol)!!!! Enjoy it while you can Captain cause soon enough you'll be the dad of an appropriately scantily dressed college coed. No music party this March Stewart, jUST CAN'T DO IT WITHOUT YA!!!! Cousin Paul and I spent much of the day together Super Bowl Sunday in NYC. Paul is now a major digital camera expert, and showed me some rockin' storage media for his downloads. (40 gig w/ color screen, the size of a palm pilot!) He's got quit a few amazing shots of the city, which he is hoping to publish on the web. We watched the Patriots defeat the Philadelphi Eagles together at a friend's party in Westchester, and almost hooked up with Jamie & Joanne. Paul is now off on an amazing 17 days backpacking trip around Switzerland with his gear in hand, snapping the most incredible shots! We all wish him well on this exciting journey, and look forward to comparing photos together soon. Wishing you all well as you await and experience the family reunion. Bon Voyage!

The skiing was great & we had 4 days of bright blue sunny skies (something I'm sure you are quite used to by now)! It's not the Caribbean but the Rockies are pretty spectacular too. We enjoyed our first ever weekend away from Ashley while Philippe's parents were here with her. It was great to get a break! And great to get home too. Ashley is speaking more French these days than English. It is funny to see her mix up which language she should use with whom. She is such a delight--giggling all the time, playing hide-n-seek, and singing her favorite tunes (which are naturally related to the Teletubbies.) Love to read your postings and view the pics. I'm heading to Atlantic City tomorrow for the power boat show. Otherwise, all's well. Do you know where you'll be for President's Day week (2/19 - 25). I'm planning a vacation, and could perhaps hook up with you if you knew where you'll be. Let me know, and happy sails! Dan

Everytime I try to send you guys a tidbit of what's happening here, the comment board closes. But now it's up so I will speak. Ali and I were in India and on our first day, we got caught in the floods of the Tsunami. It was horrendous. We did photo-journalize it, but it's too long to enter into your questbook. We experienced something and felt something we may never fully understand or be able to explain. Whole villages were washed away. And most Indians cannot swim. We are safe and sound and could use a quietier, more relaxed vacation next time. We are thinking of you and envy-ing your tan. Lov and kisses and hugs, SUSAN

Hi Nik and Stew, Trying to make arrangements for Ted for Puerto Plata. Since Kelly will not be accompanying him (we just discovered her Spring break is actually a week earlier), Ted wants to see if he can get a Tulanian male to join him so he will be in touch to get your approval. Greg has had a great December/January snowboarding across three states but now he has the flu and has missed the start of his spring term at school. We'll see how he's feeling tomorrow. The weather in NYC has improved and actually warmed to the 30s and the snow has melted a bit. Keep enjoying those balmy breezes. I am really enjoying the photos; you two look great and the scenery is delectable. Keep those pix and your diary entries coming. Love, Nad and the boys

Hi Nicole & Stewart, We love reading your log and following your journey. As you've heard there's been some cold, snowy weather here. Ethan & Jessica were thrilled to miss Hebrew school Sunday. Ethan didn't even mind shoveling the walkway...(only 12 inches of snow). Tonight we are supposed to get more and the kids are praying for a school delay tomorrow or more. Thanks for your updates, Love D,E & J

Oh Captain! My Captain! Your adventurous trip continues to amaze me! Having sailed the Leeward and Windward Islands with Dad on three different occasions (for a short 2 weeks at a time), we are re-living each moment that you share with us from the glorious Caribbean. We love hearing about your adventures and seeing those marvelous photos---you look so trim and it appears that you are one solid muscle. Joanne had been great in filling in more happy details and photos. And to you, dear Nicole, I can't tell you how excited we were to hear your voice and get a first-hand update on how much this trip means to you. Your paintings are terrific and I can't wait to read the book. Any thoughts on titles yet? I am so happy for you! With warmest love to you both ..Mom-Mom

Ahoy Stu & Nicole, Just looking at the photos and am green with envy. I didn't get to dive while I was down in FLorida -- the seas were too rough for the boats to go out-- so I still haven't had a chance to try out my underwater camera housing. Maybe I should just take it into the tub! Work has been crazy for me, lots of long hours…I want to be where you are!!! Keep up the great tales and Nicole, keep writing and painting (can't wait to read the finished book!) Love, Sheryl

Happy New Year Dalsimer Clan! Your adventures sound marvelous and the photos are fantastic! We enjoyed our own bit of adventuring in the beautiful French alps of Chamonix during the holidays. Contrary to your snorkeling & sailing in the turqoise seas, we were ice climbing and back country skiing in the shadow of the Mont Blanc. Now, we are safely back in London, trying to keep up with our little Ashley, whose newest favorite activities include taking everything apart and putting it back together again (sort of), anything Teletubbies and pushing buttons (including mine, at times!) She is full of laughter all the time. Look forward to seeing you soon on an island somewhere. Love, Cindy, Philippe & Ashley

Jamie and I are settling in on day two of our return home to picking up the dog from PA, (thank you Grandmom) grocery shopping and laundry. A far cry from turquoise water, exotic fish and remote islands. We have already planned our next reunion most probably in Barbados. The "Reality" is that we are still in the Caribbean in spirit and looking forward to our next trip. The whopping 58 degree temp was kind to us on our return, though it looks like snow tomorrow. I would like to send out a great big THANK YOU to Dr. Janet for the antibiotics, Pam Simpson for the "Airborn", and Mom-Mom for the nasal spray advise, all of which allowed me to heal quickly in the Southern sun on my arrival. Our trip was amazing as was our family time together. New Year's Eve, complete with fireworks on the beach, was quite spectacular as was the Bomba Shack's "Full Moon Celebration"-another story altogether! (You'll have to read the book) Thank you one and all for your wonderful guest comments. Wishing you a very happy and healthy New Year. xoxo, Joanne

We missed the Dalsimer tree trimming party but kept ourselves busy with entertaining 4 adorable 19 year olds from Tulane. Weather has been mild here although we expect snow maybe tomorrow. I had an adventure this morning with a mouse that finally got stuck on my glue trap –– I had to break down and knock on a neighbor's door (who I really don't like) to get rid of it for me -- ughhhhhhhh! I'm sure there are no mice in the Caribbean (right?)! I'm glad to hear that they are still making Pusser's Pain Killers down there. I remember them well. I even have the recipe so when you finally do come back to civilization I can make you one. Let me know how the diving certification goes. I gave Joanne the number & website) for DAN (Diver's Alert Network). It's divers insurance that is a good thing to have (not expensive and well worth it for peace of mind). Well keep those stories coming. Love, Sheryl

Cap'n Stew - you are now the proud and humble owner of a Balmar ARS-4 multi-stage regulator, which Mario will deliver to you next week. I am studying the 11 pages of small print and diagrams that constitute the installation manual, with the intention of inserting comments here and there to make it easier for you to actually install the bloody thing. A CD with various related stuff that I downloaded from the web may also help. Got a decent digital voltmeter on board?

Yes! Another update. We certainly look forward to new news. So glad to see that you made it to the Baths. Daddy and I were there 16 yrs. ago Nicole. CAN'T WAIT TO GO BACK! I'll bring the camera. Loved the "shoeless waitress" story. In NY it's boots and gloves on this icy night. Alan was here helping out tonight fixing: the toilet(water would not fill), the tub faucet (water would not turn off, took a while to find those wrenches and water shut off valve), the phone machine which kept blinking (reset clock after power went out)the wireless Internet connection which was disconnected(I now know where the blue box is and what it's for), testing Nicole's computer (which is charging and ready for travel), and just visiting. No worries we're all good to go now. Keep writing. Until we join you. Love, Joanne aka Mom

Hi guys, After looking at the new photos, I want to know. How many people can that boat sleep? If only I could get Uncle Joe in the Island mood. If you can, try out Sapphire Bay in St.Thomas there was great snorkeling and wave running. Things here are "Lighting-Up" for the season. Our house is probably visable from the space station. I won't be back on the computer until late next week, so have a warm and wonderful Hanukkah. Love,Aunt Annamae

Bonjour Nik and Pop, Sounds like you're having an amazing time. I'm still freezing my #** off! I'm finally reflecting on my summer trip (or my intense survival experience)and I'm journally up a STORM. Counting down the days until Mom and I can finally relax with you on the boat. The best part will def be shopping in the islands. Dad sounds like you might want to take Mom's advise and just throw that $20. overboard and save yourself the hassle of getting a new lure! Mahi mahi sounds like an exciting change from Blue Fish. Back to reality. Love, Jamie Rose

Hi Guys, While you're on or around Tortola check out Cane Garden Bay–- it is one of the prettiest coves & beaches that I remmeber there. There is also another beach that I remember going to (although I don't remember the name) where they were filming the TV movie of An Old Man and the Sea. My friend Stella lost her tooth in the surf there about 15 years ago! Cheers! Sheryl

Stu and Nichole: A great adventure! and you got to the BVI quickly. Congrats on a safe passage and on such a nice website. I live at 28 degrees south and I know from experience that it will be harder to come back to the cold white north than you think. I hope you have a good time and reconnect daughter-to-dad in a way that you each keep with you for the rest of your lives. My wife and I are in our 40s and are looking forward to throwing off the docklines in the next 4 years or so. Currently shopping for the boat to take us to our dreams. Jeff

Hi family! So glad to read an update. Everything sounds wonderful. I'd really like to see pictures of the two of you (your faces) on the updated photo pages. Can you add previous Home Port info to Ship's Log stuff so that it's not lost? Jamie and I have already started packing for the VI. Need anymore zip-lock baggies? We had a lovely Thanksgiving in PA, and attended a fabulous party for Alec's Bar Mitzvah on Sat., then shopped for a "Vincent's" dress for Jamie's upcoming formal. Jamie had sports awards this week and received a varsity letter for Cheerleading! She's getting ready for an upcoming competition. Even after a 6 hr. practice on Sun., the team didn't feel ready to compete tonight, so they'll attend the next competition. This week we're having dinner w/Mario, then it's "Girl's Night" and then we're off to Anita's for dinner. We sure are staying busy. Xuxa has calmed down and it sure is very quiet around here. We miss you and look forward to reading more from you and seeing more of you. Love and Kisses, Mommy & Jamie

Hi Stewart & Nicole, I'm still green with envy. I love the BVI's. I was last there about 15 years ago diving. Check out the caves on Virgin Gorda--very cool and some nice photo ops. If you get scuba certified on this trip the wreck of the Rhone is worth a look. In the meantime, keep the adventures coming and have a pina colada for me! Love, Sheryl

I just got a chance to see the update. I can't wait to read the book. I am at work on a rainy, dark day. I would much rather be with you both in the water off the coast of virgin gorda. My car has just been fixed after a deer caused over $3,000 worth of damage. Our basement is now clear of mold and the rebuilding process is near completion. We are on about the 5th layer of paint and it is still not right. Maybe they should try sanding and painter's tape. What do you think? Averi is moving alittle faster on 2 crutches and is trying to get to one. She is 3 weeks post-op and has developed an interest in bead jewelry - just like you Nicole. Maybe when you get back you can go into business together. Jared is finishing up school and working as an intern in a PR agency that represents musicians. He is doing well. Tony can't wait for the summer! Oh..here comes my little 5 year olds. Have to go play with the parachute now. Take care. Love you. Andrea

Dear Stewart and Nicole, Where are you now? How was Thanksgiving at Sea? Did you do fish and call it turkey? Ali, Chelsea and I drove up to Great Barrington to see Walter's younger brother, Stephan (the architect) and his wife, Beth. We stayed 3 days and had a good visit. We hadn't seen them since last Thanksgiving, and I realize just how much I missed them. It seems that life gets so hectic and we all say we will keep in touch, but don't get around to it. Don't let that happen to us. On November 9th, I had a new granddaughter named Sophia Isabel. I will try to send you a picture, but if I fail, you know you'll have to sail home right away and give me more computer lessons, right? Just kidding. Love and kisses to you both, SUSAN

My five family members and I grew up sailing a Grampian Catch 34. In addition to learning how to eat canned foods 24/ 7 cooked in an electric frypan, we learned how to respect nature's winds and how to read every luff in the sail. We learned that a good song and a good book and each other are all we need to sustain us until the next port. Nicole and Stuart, you are on a life-altering endeavor. Take good care of each other and Godspeed. Keep up this inspiring website; you are teaching all of us how to live life to its fullest. xo, Beth Gillin

The tan is fading! It's been 5 days since I returned to Cleveland from Miami (Coconut Grove), our final destination. Two of us sailed a 43'er from Cleveland Ohio. It took us just a little under two months, and it was a blast. I hope you got to see sea turtles, dolphins, and whales (we heard whales at night but never saw them.) The comments you are recieving are similar to ours. How many shooting stars did you see? Any other ships at see? Any debris? Many times we were alone, and at others there were boats everywhere. The shooting stars were there just when I needed them to put a smile on my face. And the debris was minimal. I wonder how it works out that one always seems to enter a new port at night. The same gods that put the wind on the nose no matter what I suppose. Have a safe and fun journey through life. Seems like you got a good start.

Okay - here's a recommendation for dealing with the water coming through the hatches. First, look deep inside the crevices of your boat for some duct tape (I know &%$*in' Craig left lots of it everywhere!). Then, find an unused doormat, throw it over the hatch, take some plastic sheeting, and tape it all down with duct tape. Voila - instant waterproof hatch! PS - this method has been tested and works pretty well on the head-hatch for Sea Major!

Stewart and Nicole, Having done the Bermuda thing a few years ago in 20 foot seas and 40 mph winds I don't envey you but I definately understand the feelings at night. Did you have any rain? I recall sheets and sheets of rain that simply blocked out all vision-maybe a good thing. And a reliable auto pilot is a real joy. I can't believed you actually sailed into reef surrounded Bermuda-an through that narrow entrance! Hope your voyage to the Carribe is calmer. Are you guys familiar with Peter Compton's book, Troubleshooting Marine Diesels. I have found it very straight forward and helpful-published by the International Marine Sailboat Library in Camden, Maine. Good luck on the next leg and have fun. Bill
